Illinois - NCAA Football Preview - Preview of Illinois team and players 2009 NCAA football season

2009 NCAA - Illinois
The Illini went from a Rose Bowl bid earned in the 2007 season to a losing record last year. Many Illini faithful who were apprehensive on the hire of Ron Zook from Florida were reminded exactly why in his fourth season in Champaign. Despite outgaining opponents, Illinois won just five games. A litany of mistakes at the wrong time and the inability of the defense to get a key stop were the major culprits in last season's step back (and they were also problems for Zook in Gainesville). No one will argue with Zook's ability to recruit as good as anyone, though, and there are certainly experienced and talented players waiting to take the Illini back into the 10-win discussion.

Expect a lot of track meets, as the offense returns a lot and the defense has several question marks. On offense, QB Juice Williams can make plays with his legs and his arm. His main problem is a penchant for mistakes; he threw 16 interceptions to go with 22 touchdowns last fall. Illinois did lead the Big Ten in passing last fall, and Williams's receivers figure to be improved. The O-line returns four starters, and all 2,034 yards rushed for in 2008 are accounted for on the 2009 roster. The secondary, which intercepted just three passes in Big Ten games and will feature young players, especially at corner, figures to be tested. The defense did lead the Big Ten in sacks and tackles for losses. The Illini also ranked 113th in net punting last year, and that must improve.
ASK the bookie? - It's hard not to respect the job Zook has done since taking over. Last season looks like it might have been a temporary setback. The season-opener against Missouri is winnable, and we'll know how good this team is early in the season. A trip to Ohio State and home games against Penn State and Michigan State are also included in the first five before the load lightens later on. Illinois plays eight Big Ten games in successive weeks starting on Sept. 26. Purdue (Oct. 3) and Wisconsin (Sept. 26) are the only other two league teams that have that kind of schedule.
