Purdue - NCAA Football Preview - Preview of Purdue team and players 2009 NCAA football season

2009 NCAA - Purdue
Gone is longtime Purdue coach Joe Tiller, who turns over the keys to ex-assistant and former Eastern Kentucky head coach Danny Hope. Tiller groomed Hope last season to get him ready, but some insiders don't like the hire. The Boilers have been a .500 football team the last four years - and that's WITH stud QB Curtis Painter and RB Kory Sheets. Hope made a great hire for his OC in getting underrated Gary Nord, who is forced to rebuild the offense. The Boilers will have an untested QB, an oft-injured RB (Jaycen Taylor) and questions at WR, where Hope wants about nine guys to alternate. Heading into fall, there are two proven receivers in the offense. The O-line returns four guys and will be a strength.

The defense ranked 93rd against the rush last fall, and let's face it, the Boilers have almost always gotten gashed by good Big Ten teams and give up loads of yards and points. The secondary should again be decent - though they might have to help stop the run. Purdue ranked 117th in net punting last fall, so that has to obviously improve. What also needs to improve is the quality of recruits that Purdue lands. Remember, Drew Brees was the QB there a decade ago, so bringing in a 5-star recruit or two is not out of the question. If they can surround those players with good support, the days of 9-win seasons can return to West Lafayette once again. Just not this fall.
ASK the bookie? - The jury is still out on Hope. The Bookie has heard both positive and negative reports on the new leader of the Old Gold-and-Black, the only new head coach in the league this fall. The non-con schedule is interesting and should give immediate answers. MAC West foes Toledo and Northern Illinois invade, sandwiched around a tough trip to Eugene to face Oregon, then Notre Dame comes to Ross-Ade Stadium to close out September. The Boilers miss Penn State and Iowa, which will certainly help them try to attain the (at least) six wins needed for bowl aspirations.
